5 Areas of Life You Actually Are In Control Of

As Jennifer Rothschild puts it, “Control over the events of our lives is a pleasant daydream at best and a cruel fantasy at worst.” I myself have so lovingly referred to myself as a ‘control freak’ or a ‘perfectionist’. The real curse is self-sabatoge. Life isn’t perfect and neither are any of us. And none of us will ever be. We will stumble, fail, fall, and encounter all sorts of unfortunate events.

However, there are five areas of our life we can absolutely control.

1. We have control over our attitudes.

Waking up on the wrong side of the bed is not a random force of nature that you have no power to change. Think of all the times as a child when you threw a temper tantrum and someone bribed you with ice cream or a Disney movie. (Okay, this isn’t just me, right?) Suddenly, we transformed from a little monster into an angel and it was completely painless. As Skip Ross says, “Attitude is everything!”

2.  We have control over our responses to circumstances.

Through the slow trials and the fast-paced mishaps, your reaction to what is happening around you is completely your doing. What does this mean? You can always make the wiser, better, smarter choice to be happy.

3. We have control over our choice to seek God.

Free will, indeed. This is also why it is so easy to stray.

4. We have control over our relationship with Him.

He will never abandon you. But you are entirely capable of abandoning Him. Why turn away from unconditional love? Isn’t love the exact thing our society romanticizes?

5. We have control over our choice to acknowledge He is God and I’m not.

So, the world doesn’t revolve around me. It’s a little disappointing, I suppose. (just kidding.) God is the only one with the control we cannot have. Let go and let God.

“Incredible change happens in your life when you decide to take control of what you do have power over instead of craving control over what you don’t.”
