Month of May: Favorites
Hi everyone! It’s been awhile. I’ve been spending the past month really narrowing my focus on finishing up school work before I head out of town for several weeks.
But even the most tedious of school projects and research papers can’t stop life from happening! I thought that it might be fun to share some of the things that I have discovered in the past month that have made me smile, made me cry, and made me ponder.
Music | “Take It Back” – Liza Anne – Two
Believe it or not, this was actually a free song on iTunes this month. (And in case you didn’t know, every Tuesday iTunes offers 10-15 free songs & tv shows). I had never heard of Liza Anne before I heard the one minute snippet of this song, but I immediately fell in love with her dreamy voice and music behind the lyrics. She is a singer/songwriter with a melodic voice that makes you want to hop in your car and drive along the PCH with the windows down on a lovely summer day.
Download the song on iTunes.
Movie | Unbroken
So, I was late to the game on this one. This movie was released in theaters last Christmas, but just released for rent/purchase on Apple TV. Going in without much expectations either way, I was blown away. Completely. What a tremendous story that tugged at my heartstrings the entire 137 minutes of screen time.
Directed by Angelina Jolie, Unbroken tells the true story of Olympian Louis Zamperini and his time serving in the United States military during WWII. Brilliant played by actor Jack O’Connell, Zamperini’s experience of surviving a plane crash, surviving 47 days at sea on a bullet-riddled life raft, surviving a terrifying warden’s relentless brutality in a Japanese POW camp… it will keep you riveted. O’Connell left me speechless and the story of a man who passed away shortly after this film was completed, will stick with me forever.
10/10, highly recommended.
Book | “Wild” by Cheryl Strayed
You’ve probably heard of this one. The incredible Reese Witherspoon recently starred as the book’s author and narrator in the movie adaptation, earning her an Oscar-nomination for her amazing performance. Wild by Cheryl Strayed is a #1 New York Times Best seller and has earned that title well.
In wake of tragedy, 22 year-old Cheryl Strayed made the daunting decision to hike the 1000+ mile Pacific Crest Trail with no proper experience or training. And she decided to do it alone. The story is a powerful and compelling one – a real depiction of the sharp sting life’s most challenging realities can inflict upon us all and the ultimate joy that can be achieved when we face them head-on. It’s a story of healing and well worth a read. I’ve enjoyed it immensely.

Podcast | Mystery Show
I love listening to a great podcast. For awhile, I was completely and utterly hooked on The Serial Podcast by This American Life. And although that series finished a few months ago (and I’m still waiting patiently for season 2) I decided to check out the charts on the Podcast app to see what else was making headlines.
Mystery Show by Gimlet holding it’s own at spot #2 this week and rightfully so. Starlee Kine hosts the podcast where every week she divulges into a new mystery. So far, the podcast only has two cases to it’s name, but it’s extremely promising. Starlee has an infectious voice and personality and her cases are fun and riveting to listen to. Not to mention, May 30th’s episode was all about 90’s (and 2000-10’s, let’s be real) pop queen, Britney Spears!
Beauty | TONYMOLY Face Mix Smooth Primer
Here’s one for all of you who wear make-up or like to every once in awhile. My go-to’s are usually some foundation and mascara and I’m extremely dedicated to the brand Artistry Beauty. However, the one thing missing is primer! I’ve recently taken to using primer to brighter up my face a bit after I cleanse, tone, and moisturize it in the morning. Primer goes underneath your makeup and is often used by photographers. It can even out skin tone, help the makeup last longer, and yadda, yadda, yadda….
I tried a couple of different drug store brands, not really finding one I liked. They would either smell funny or not make much of a difference. I happened upon a brand called TONYMOLY on Urban Outfitters retail website and decided to give it a try. I was very pleased! It doesn’t smell bad and it has a silky feel, coming out of the bottle as a clear gel. Admittedly, it’s a bit pricey for the amount you get. But save for special occasions and I’d say it’s worth it!
Purchase on Urban Outfitters’ retail website.
